A quirky “Hansel and Gretel” home in Melbourne’s northwest with a spiral staircase, woodshed and outdoor fishponds is set to make a buyer’s fairytale dream come true this weekend.
The cute-as-a-button house at 4 Leila St, Essendon, was named “Boonie Doon” by its original owners, a plumber and his wife who built the property in the 1940s-1950s.
Raine & Horne Ascot Vale director George Errichiello said the “amazing home looks like it has been kept in a time capsule for the last 70 years”.

The Art Deco house includes intricate carved woodwork, a stone fireplace, timber windows, picture rails, decorative cornices and ceiling mouldings.
“The craftsmanship in that home is unique, you will never find another one like it,” Mr Errichiello said.
“I call it the ‘Hansel and Gretel’ house.
“It’s a solid red brick clinker home with beautiful ornate features and a lot of attention to detail.
“The cottage-style kitchen is all handcrafted.”

Backed by geometric red wallpaper, the spiral staircase looks like something straight out a fairytale cottage.
Mr Errichiello said the house’s signs reading “Boonie Doon” predated the classic Australian film The Castle in which character Darryl Kerrigan and his family love going on holiday to the small Victorian village.
“Those signs have been up for decades, they were all done by the owner in the shed at least 45 years ago,” Mr Errichiello said.
He said the house sold for the first time in 2021.
CoreLogic records show the owner paid $1.29m for Bonnie Doon.
Bonnie Doon boasts off-street parking plus a garage, shed storage, a sunroom and separate laundry.
Mr Errichiello described the property as an “uncut diamond”.
“I personally love the rock wall in the lounge room on the mantel,” he said.
“Being a bit funky, I also love the red wallpaper and spiral staircase. It’s very solid, it can carry four grown men and doesn’t shake or make a noise.”
The rear garden has plenty of room to play make-believe.
He said the five-bedroom property “on the cusp of Brunswick West” was also, fittingly, in a serene location on a quiet street close to the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail.
Bonnie Doon will be auctioned with $1.135m-$1.245m price hopes on Saturday June 25 at 1pm.
